161. Neu-Balzer

Location of the Volga German village of Neu-Balzer (also called Perevozniki).

The Volga German colony of Neu-Balzer was established in 1863 by some people originally from Balzer (also called Goliy Karamysh). In 1913 the village had 103 households and 926 residents, and by the start of WWII there were 150 households and about 1,000 residents here. After the deportation of the local Germans in 1941, the village's name was changed to Perevozniki. It has seized to exist several decades ago.

In this photograph, you can see the Perevozinka River running in the background behind the mounds of earth which are the remains of the houses that once stood here.
