87. Seewald

The location of the Volga German village of Seewald, later Verkhovye.

The settlement seized to exist a long time ago; today, there are only a few earth mounds marking the exact spots where the individual houses and buildings used to be. We found a Kazakh cemetery in the vicinity of Seewald. Unfortunately, we could not find any traces of the old German cemetery.

Pictured here is the Karamysh River; Seewald was situated on the right bank of the river. Note some mounds seen in the center of the photograph. These are the foundations of the houses in the lower part of the village. This street was the nearest to the river and was reportedly called die Untergass' (Germ. for "The Low Lane"). We also found a memorial mark for an oil-well with a note "Oil-well # 498, March 27 1967".
